Carl Martin

Biography

Carl Martin retired from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) after 30+ years of civil service. Mr. Martin's final assignment at the Johnson Space Center was in the Astronaut Office Safety Branch, primarily representing the Astronaut Office in the Payload Safety Review Panel (PSRP), and delivering safety presentations to the entire Astronaut Office. The PSRP reviewed and approved the Hazard Reports and safety documents for International Space Station (ISS) payloads. He was also elected and served as the chairman of the JSC Safety Action Team (JSAT), a safety forum for all organizations and contractors at Johnson Space Center.

Earlier assignments included Space Shuttle Program Systems Engineering and Integration Office (SE&I), leading the Communications and Tracking and Electromagnetic Effects teams, and the JSC SE&I integration lead with Kennedy Space Center. Other SE&I assignments included leading the enhancement of SE&I inter-center communication resources and establishing the SE&I day-of-launch mission control support center. Mr. Martin also supported multiple shuttle missions, representing SE&I in the Mission Evaluation Room.

Mr. Martin was tasked to assemble a team to support Columbia Recovery Operations in East Texas, and participated in ground and flight evidence operations with the FBI, US Forestry Service, Texas Forestry Service, local law enforcement, and volunteers. He also served in the Columbia Recovery Office at JSC which managed the long-term recovery of Columbia.

Earlier in his career Mr. Martin worked on a variety of hardware and software projects at JSC within the Engineering Directorate, after accepting a civil service transfer from the Federal Aviation Administration, Albuquerque Air Traffic Control Center, where he was training as an enroute air traffic controller. He also briefly worked for Martin Marietta on DOD projects.

Mr. Martin received his Bachelors of Engineering at the University of South Florida. He is married and has three daughters and a son. He is a private pilot, with instrument rating, and currently owns and flies an RV-6A, an experimental single-engine airplane.
